About 5Four
5Four Digital is a remote-first branding, web design, and Answer Engine Optimization studio founded in 2014 and based in Miami, Florida. We build brands, websites, and marketing as 5Four® Systems that client teams run themselves through the Approval Loop, with an AI layer for updates and an approval step before anything goes live. Over 250 brands have shipped with us, including Aalyria, Amazon, Harvard, Jeeter, and Justin Welsh.
5Four Digital was founded in 2014 by John D. Saunders, a designer, developer, and educator based in Miami. John leads strategy and creative direction for the studio and has spoken at events including AIGA, Adobe MAX, and Webflow Conf.
5Four Digital is a remote-first studio headquartered in Miami, Florida, with team members across the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and around the world. We don't keep a public office, so client work runs async through ClickUp, Slack, and Figma.
Ten people across design, development, quality assurance, and client management. We stay lean on purpose so every client works directly with the people doing the work, with no junior handoffs and no account-manager filter.
We work with founders, marketing leaders, and product teams at startups, SaaS companies, agencies, creators, and mission-driven organizations. Past clients include Aalyria, Amazon, Harvard, Columbia, Jeeter, Justin Welsh, Firelight Films, and the Internal Audit Collective.
Yes. 5Four Digital is fully remote and works with founders and teams across North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. We operate in English, run async-first communication through ClickUp and Slack, and schedule live sessions across time zones.
5Four® Systems
A service is a finished piece of work: a brand identity, a website, an AEO foundation. A system is that work plus the Handover: the templates, the AI layer, the Change Log, and the training your team needs to run it without us. Every service is built so it can become part of a system later.
The Site System is a website built on Sanity, Vercel, and GitHub in accounts you own, plus the Approval Loop, the Change Log, and the training your team needs to update it without a developer. It's the part of 5Four® Systems that the Brand and Growth Systems plug into.
The Brand System is a complete brand identity plus the Handover: templates, a Brand Assistant trained on your guidelines, a prompt library, and training. It's the part of 5Four® Systems that lets your team produce on-brand work without a designer.
The Growth System is a set of landing page archetypes, a campaign kit, and an AEO content model, built on your Site System and run through the Approval Loop. It lets your team ship pages and campaigns without a designer or developer.
The Approval Loop is how every change to a 5Four system gets made. Your team asks for the change in plain English, a preview link comes back with the change in place, the person you named approves it, and it goes live with a line in your Change Log. No tickets, no developer wait, and nothing ships without a human approving it.
The Ticket Tax is what most agencies charge after launch: a fee, a wait, and a developer for every change to your site, however small. 5Four® Systems replaces it with the Approval Loop and a flat monthly plan, 5Four® Run.
A private AI workspace in your own account, loaded with your positioning, voice, guidelines, and templates. Your team asks it for decks, posts, and collateral, and it responds in your brand's voice and format. It drafts; your team approves.
Yes. Brand sprints, website builds, AEO audits, and migrations all run standalone. You don't have to buy a system. We'll tell you honestly if a single service won't be enough to hit your goal.
Because the archetypes are built from your site's design system and ship through the same Approval Loop. Without the Site System there is nothing for them to run on.
Budgets and timelines
Every project is scoped to your goals, so the price depends on what you need: a migration, a new build, a brand, or all three. On a 30-minute strategy call we'll give you a clear price range, and custom work gets a written proposal within three business days. The number is always in writing before work starts.
Site migrations run two to three weeks. Brand Systems run four to six weeks. New sites run six to ten weeks, depending on page count and content, and the Growth System adds three to four weeks. We commit to deadlines in writing during scoping and ship in weekly milestones so you always see progress.
Yes. For most projects we can give you a clear price range on the call. If yours needs a custom scope, we'll send a written proposal within three business days.
Yes. 5Four® Run keeps your systems current for a flat monthly fee and includes a bucket of human hours for anything new to the system. No per-change billing. No Ticket Tax.
Getting started
It starts with a 30-minute strategy call, booked on our contact page. We'll talk through your goals, timeline, and budget, then follow up with a proposal within three business days. No obligation, no sales pressure.
Nothing at all. Share your website when you book and we'll take a look beforehand. If you have brand guidelines or a current agreement with another agency, feel free to bring those too.
A sense of what success looks like, a rough timeline, and a ballpark budget if you have one. Any brand or website files help too. A finished brief isn't necessary; we'll shape the scope together.
That's completely fine. Plenty of teams book a call while they're still planning. You'll leave with clear next steps and no pressure to take them now.
Of course. We're happy to sign a mutual NDA before the call. Send yours over when you book and we'll return it signed before we meet.
No special background needed. Every Handover includes training for your team and an SOP for the requests you make most. For regulated teams, your compliance approver joins that training so they know exactly where to review and approve.
Ownership and technology
You do. We call it the No-Hostage Rule. The code, content, assets, and hosting live in accounts in your name, and 5Four works as an admin on them. If we part ways, you keep a complete working site and every file. You lose only the Approval Loop and the assistant upkeep we run for you.
Yes. That's the whole point of the Site System. Content, layout, and new pages built from your approved sections are yours to make through the Approval Loop. The Guardrails keep every change on-brand, and anything new to the system, like a new section design, comes to us.
No. Your team writes requests in plain English. The Approval Loop turns them into changes, shows a preview, and waits for approval. Nobody on your side touches code, and nobody has to.
It routes to us. Requests for something new to the system, like a new section design or an integration, land with your 5Four team and get scoped the same day. You always know which side of the line a request is on.
Sites run on Sanity CMS, Vercel, and GitHub, in accounts you own, and are built with Claude Code. If your current site is on Webflow, WordPress, or Squarespace, we migrate it. Product interfaces are designed in Figma and built in React or Next.js.
Yes. Most projects start from a site on Webflow, WordPress, Squarespace, or a custom build. We move your content, keep your existing URLs working with redirects, and relaunch on a stack you own.
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your website so generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews can read, understand, and cite your content directly in their answers. It combines clean semantic HTML, structured data (JSON-LD), conversational Q&A copy, and an llms.txt file so AI engines can quote you as well as rank you.
SEO optimizes for a blue link clicked by a human. AEO optimizes for an answer composed by an AI. SEO rewards keywords, backlinks, and ranking position. AEO rewards entity clarity, schema markup, direct answers, and citation-worthy authority. The two stack. Solid SEO foundations make AEO easier, but AEO takes extra work: conversational copy, FAQ blocks, schema, and an llms.txt file.
The Brand Assistant runs in a Claude workspace in your name. If you don't have one, we set it up with you during onboarding. The account is yours, like everything else.
Industries and work
No. We specialize in a way of working: build the brand and the site as a system, hand it over, and stay on through the Approval Loop. The twelve industries on our Industries page are where we've shipped the most, and each one starts with the system that fits it.
Yes. We've shipped for RIAs, investment advisory firms, and fintech platforms including Generation Capital Advisors, Ritholtz Wealth Management, and MoneyLit. We work with your compliance counsel so copy, disclosures, and data handling meet SEC, FINRA, or applicable regional requirements before launch, and the Approval Loop keeps it that way after.
Yes. We've built for health education and health services teams, including Northwell School of Health Sciences and Onboard Health. For anything that touches patient information, we plan data handling with your compliance team before we build, and the Approval Loop gives your reviewers the final say on every change.
Yes. Education and public sector sites are built to WCAG 2.1 AA, with every section typed so staff can update content without breaking accessibility. Clients include Future Ready NYC and NYC Public Schools' Office of Student Pathways.
Yes, and it's some of our favorite work. Firelight Media, AFSP, Embracing Equity, and the Amistad Research Center all run on systems we built. Small teams get a site and a brand they can update themselves, so more of the budget goes to the mission.
Almost certainly. Book a strategy call and we'll look at what you have, tell you which system to start with, and give you a clear price range before the call ends.
Where a client has shared numbers, we include them in the case study. Many clients are private about performance data, so some studies describe the build and the Handover without metrics.
